It’s true we do see personality when someone says something that we didn’t see coming. Or, they say something that we thought, but didn’t know how to put in words. A lot of times people will clarify a statement with “I’m just being myself.” Well, once again, that’s fine, but if you being yourself makes me want to “be without yourself” that’s just what I’m going to do. There is a way to get any message across. This is where we need to be ourself in how we deliver the message. We can use humor. We can use intellect. We can use pleasantry. Most importantly, use honesty. It is a great feeling to deliver a message in the way we wanted while being respectful. This is why a lot of people struggle with being themselves. They talk up or down to others. You don’t deliver the message you want if you talk to someone like they are better than you. You don’t deliver it the right way if you to someone like they are worse than you.
It’s not a complete success rate, but we must focus on talking to others like we are talking to ourselves. Deliver messages that we would want to hear. Deliver them in a way that we would like to listen to. There will be times when people don’t like what you have to say and don’t like the way you said it. This is when we can honestly say, “I’m just being myself.” When we see another person as an equal, and for some that means raising our self confidence, for others that means lowering our cockiness, we will treat people in a way in which a majority will want us to, “be ourselves”.
“Be yourself” means being true to who you are
Have you ever had someone describe a movie that they’ve only seen the trailer for. They kind of predict what’s going to happen. They can describe one scene they really remember. They can tell you if they’re excited to see it, or are going to skip it. This is how people describe you. Now, you’re the producer of the movie. If you heard someone describe it to you, you would know all the details they don’t know. Listen to people’s descriptions of you. It’s how you’re being perceived. But don’t read the reviews of a curmudgeon about a romantic comedy. If someone doesn’t like a certain type of film it’s never going to be good. Being yourself means we never rely on how others see our movie to know if we did a good job. Being yourself means we know what we accomplished in making the movie of our life. We know when we get undue praise and undue criticism. Let’s focus on that.
