Know Thyself Meaning : स्वात्मानं जानीहि

Narada requested that Sage Sanatkumara teach him.

‘Say what you know: I’ll say what you don’t,’ Sanatkumara said.

‘Lord, I know Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharvana Veda, history and culture known as the fifth Veda, grammar, ceremony, geometry, astrology, mineralogy, logic, economics, philosophy, metaphysics, zoology, politics, science, and fine arts,’ Narada said.

‘Lord, but these are just elementary understandings; I do not know the Self.’
‘I’ve learnt from masters that he who knows Self goes beyond grief, so I’m drowning in it.’
‘Assist me in going beyond and beyond.’ and what’s the true meaning of know thyself?

Sanatkumara : So, in order to move past grief, one must first understand oneself.

The Arunachala sage, Ramana maharishi of Thiruvannaamalai, Tamilnadu, India, also stressed the importance of asking oneself,
When he asked “Who am I?” , here ‘Who am I’ inquiry indicates tracing the origin of the word ‘I.’
When you see this, you have found what you were looking for.

This means that a human’s highest purpose has been attained.

Know Thyself meaning is the same when it is taught by Sanatkumara, Socrates, or Ramana Maharshi.

First, one must inquire about himself and discover who he is.
