Maharana Pratap: A Great King and Rajpoot warrior.
“……………..Fight and you may die, run and you will live. At least a while, and dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade all of the days from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies, that they may take our lives, but they will never take, OUR FREEDOM!”
This may be a dialogue from an American movie to some, but to Indians, especially from Rajasthan, this is the essence of their lives. This is precisely what a son of the soil, Maharana Pratap Singh Sisodia had thought, as he set out for the Battle of Haldighati.
Born to the illustrious Sisodia clan of Mewar, Maharana Pratap was in exile when his homeland was snatched away in 1567 by the Mughals. As he staked claim, his stepmother tried to place her own son Jagmal on the throne. However, the nobles, who never forgot the selflessness of Pratap Singh, rebelled, and they ultimately brought him back to Mewar, anointing Pratap as Maharana Pratap, the rightful ruler of Mewar.
As Emperor Akbar annexed one kingdom after the another, by hook or by crook, he sent a message through Raja Man Singh as well. However, Maharana Pratap could accept anything but slavery, and he refused the Mughal terms point blank. He also vowed that until he regained Chittor, he would never sleep on the bed, even to the cost of his own life.
The two forces met at Haldighati, a narrow pass in the Aravali Hills of modern Rajasthan. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Maharana Pratap’s forces proved more than a match to the Mughals, and though the Mughals had an upper hand, they never won the day, because they could never capture Maharana Pratap alive, courtesy his legendary horse Chetak, who carried him away, even to the peril of his own life.
Braving every difficulty known, Rana Pratap’s selflessness caught the attention of the Bhils, who selflessly devoted themselves to his cause. Impressed by his commitment to his motherland, a rich banker, Bhamashah also came forward to his assistance, and soon Rana Pratap regained more than half of his original kingdom. Though he couldn’t attain Chittor as he breathed his last, Rana Pratap had regained the pride of Mewar, and more importantly, he had destroyed the so-called invincibility of Akbar the Great.
