Long-Sleeve Sanskrit T-shirt:
Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah Meaning :
In Bhagavad Gita, it is said that even if your own stand against you, if you’re fighting for a just cause, there’s nothing to worry about, for there is no greater achievement than to fight for Dharma. When Arjuna hesitated to raise arms against his own ilk, Shri Krishna persuaded him to shun the attachment to his kith and kin, for he was fighting against Dharma, and even if his own stood with Adharma, Arjuna should focus on restoring Dharma rather than give up his legacy as a brave, unintimidating warrior.
Likewise, if you strive to conserve your culture and your way of life, the culture will preserve your legacy as well. At times, you may face the ones you call your own, and the ones you love the most as the most hardened of your opponents. However, when it comes to upholding Dharma, even the strongest of relations shouldn’t matter, especially if they act as an impediment in the pursuit to uphold the just cause.
Why is it called, ‘Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah’?
Often, we overlook our own history, which is replete with such examples. Rana Hammir, the man who ignited the fire of rebellion throughout the Indian peninsula in a way with his rebellion against Turkish rule, did not hesitate to go even against his own father-in-law when it turned out that he was openly assisting the Sultan of Delhi in his bid to destroy Mewar as well as the entire Rajputana.
When Maharana Pratap Singh rebelled against the Mughal Empire, he knew that he was going to invoke the ire of the other rulers, even some of his own kinsmen, who were more favorable towards an alliance with Emperor Akbar. However, for Maharana Pratap, his motherland came first, even if it meant a hard life in the jungles. He was ready to starve, but not ready to give up his self-respect, and above all, the cause of Dharma.
Though his health wasn’t with him, when it came to protect his motherland, Peshwa Madhavrao rebelled against his own uncle, Raghunath Rao, in order to set the Maratha Empire in order. Not only did he succeed in his fight, he also restored the legacy of the Marathas throughout the length and breadth of Bharatvarsha, though at the cost of his own life. His message was clear – Nothing at the cost of my nation, and nothing at the cost of Dharma, even if it means standing up against your own family.
