Maharaja Surajmal, The Burly Jat Ruler:
Maharaja Surajmal or Sujan Singh, a tall and burly Jat ruler, was one of the fiercest figures of resistance against the Afghan and Rohilla invaders in the North. Under Sujan Singh’s (Surajmal) able leadership, the Jats had grown into a fearsome tribe of farmer warriors, who had become a nightmare for the Rohillas, Afghans and Mughals alike. Despite being powerful, both militarily and tactically, neither of the three factions could overcome the menace of the Jats, under the powerful leadership of Maharaja Surajmal.
Some regrets continue to plague India, one of them being a warrior like Maharaja Surajmal not being able to help the Maratha forces in their fight against the foreign invaders forces in the North. Had it not been for a grave misunderstanding, he was way more than ready to assist the Marathas against the battle with the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali. In fact, Sujan Singh (Maharaj Surajmal) advised the Maratha forces not to act in haste and charge head on. Sadly, for reason best known to the Marathas, his advice was looked down upon, and he was forced to part ways.
However, when Raja Surajmal heard of the martyrdom of Marathas at the Battle of Panipat, the guilt of not helping them ate the warrior from within. He made up for his mistake to abandon the Marathas by helping the wounded and the destitute, who had somehow managed to make their way out of the battlefields of Panipat. Raja Surajmal died fighting a crafty ambush set up by the Mughals near Shahdara in 1763, only 2 years after the Battle of Panipat. Sadly, Raja Surajmal’s bravery and his exploits are still unknown to many, especially to a community which had once drove tyrants like Timur out of India.
