Rani Keladi Chennamma: They say, Hell Hath no Fury like a Woman Scorned.
Muhiuddin Muhammad Alamgir, also as Aurangzeb is known to be one of the most tyrannical rulers to ever have walked on this Earth. However, there were many brave warriors, who forced Aurangzeb to bite the dust, and Rani Keladi Chennamma was one of them.
Born to Sidappa Shetty in Kundapur, Keladi Chenamma was a brave warrior, who was equally humble. She was married to Raja Somashekhara Nayaka in 1667, who unfortunately breathed his last in 1677. Despite his death, Rani Keladi Chennamma gathered her spirits and took over as the ruler of the kingdom, until a man sought her asylum, which would change the dynamics of her kingdom for once, and for all.
After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the gruesome murder of his son Sambhaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb should have nothing to worry about. However, Rajaram Chhatrapati, and his wife Tarabai Mohite, daughter of the brave General Hambirrao Mohite. As Rajaram lost the prized fort of Gingee, he was forced to seek asylum.
When Aurangzeb came to know about it, he was livid with rage, and ordered his forces to invade her kingdom of Keladi Chennamma. When asked to think again, he scoffed at the very thought and said, “What chances does a mere woman have against my mighty forces?”
However, the middle-aged warrior queen chennamma proved to be more than a match for his forces. When the Mughal forces raided her kingdom, she only not gave them a nice lesson in warfare, but also held a huge number of Mughal commanders captive. It was only when Aurangzeb was forced to beg for peace, did the warrior queen chennamma declare a ceasefire, proving that in her kingdom, nobody, be it the subjects or asylum seekers, would be unsafe, as long as rani chennamma was alive. It is a shame that most of us don’t know about this warrior queen, who gave the forces of Aurangzeb a living nightmare for daring to attack her kingdom.
