Patanjali Yoga Sutra – Shloka with Meaning

Composed by Maharishi Patanjali Yoga Darshan also known as Yoga Sutra collection of Slokas in Sanskrit is one of the major philosophy of Indian 6 philosophies. The whole scientific and spiritual aspect of yoga has been included by the Sutra in 4 feet.

  1. Samadhi Pada – on enlightenment
  2. Sadhana Pada – about practice
  3. Vibhuti Pada –about results
  4. Kaivalya Pada –about liberation

Yoga Darshana is also known as Patanjali Yoga Sutra all over the world, and it is the only authentic treatise on Yoga in the whole world. “Yoga has everything to offer for the one who has sought outside and has not found, even the Supreme Soul, through the purity of body, mind and intellect, this journey through the purity of body, mind and intellect becomes established in the form of God while doing self-realization.

Yoga One Life Along with style, there is life itself. Whatever the distortions are in today’s time or all the problems that will arise in front of the world in the coming time, 99% solution of all those problems will be possible only through yoga. Yoga is also called Samadhi and Samadhi means solution.

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः 

Transliteration

yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ

Hindi Translation 

मन अर्थात् चित्त की वृत्तियों का सर्वथा रुक जाना योग है ।

English Translation 

Yoga is hindering the Chitta from taking various forms(Vrittis).

तपःस्वाध्यायेश्वरप्रणिधानानि क्रियायोगः॥२.१॥

तपः, स्वाध्याय, ईश्वर-प्रणिधानानि, क्रिया-योग: ॥

Transliteration

tapaḥsvādhyāyeśvarapraṇidhānāni kriyāyogaḥ॥

tapaḥ, svādhyāya, īśvara-praṇidhānāni, kriyā-yoga: ॥

Hindi translation 

तप, अध्यात्मशास्त्रों के पठन-पाठन और ईश्वर शरणागति – ये तीनों क्रिया योग हैं।

English Translation 

Austerity, study of scared literature and surrendering fruits of work to God are called Kriya-Yoga

यमनियमासनप्राणायामप्रत्याहारधारणाध्यानसमाधयोऽष्टावङ्गानि॥२.२९॥

Transliteration

yamaniyamāsanaprāṇāyāmapratyāhāradhāraṇādhyānasamādhayo’ṣṭāvaṅgāni॥

Hindi translation 

यम, नियम, आसन, प्राणायाम, प्रत्याहार, धारणा, ध्यान और समाधि; ये आठ योग के अंग हैं ।

English Translation 

Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi; are the eight limbs of Yoga.

अहिंसाप्रतिष्ठायां तत्सन्निधौ वैरत्यागः॥२.३५॥

Transliteration

ahiṃsāpratiṣṭhāyāṃ tatsannidhau vairatyāgaḥ॥

Hindi translation 

अहिंसा की दृढ़ स्थिति हो जाने पर उस योगी के निकट सब प्राणी वैरभाव त्याग कर देते हैं ।

English Translation 

On being firmly established in non-violence, all beings coming near him cease to be hostile.

सत्यप्रतिष्ठायां क्रियाफलाश्रयत्वम्॥२.३६॥

Transliteration

satyapratiṣṭhāyāṃ kriyāphalāśrayatvam॥

Hindi translation 

सत्य में दृढ़ स्थिति हो जाने पर उस योगी की क्रिया अर्थात् कर्म फल के आश्रय का भाव आ जाता है।

English Translation 

On being firmly established in truthfulness the Yogi gets the power of attaining for himself and others the fruits of work without the work.

अस्तेयप्रतिष्ठायां सर्वरत्नोपस्थानम्॥२.३७॥

Transliteration

asteyapratiṣṭhāyāṃ sarvaratnopasthānam॥

Hindi translation 

अस्तेय अर्थात् चोरी के अभाव में दृढ़ स्थिति हो जाने पर उस योगी के सामने सब प्रकार के रत्न प्रकट हो जाते हैं ।

English Translation 

On being firmly established in non-stealing all wealth comes to the Yogi.

ब्रह्मचर्य में दृढ़ स्थिति हो जाने पर सामर्थ्य का लाभ होता है ।

When continence is established energy is gained..

Transliteration

aparigrahasthairye janmakathaṃtāsaṃbodhaḥ॥2.39॥

Hindi translation 

अपरिग्रह के दृढ़ प्रतिष्ठित हो जानेपर; पूर्वजन्म कैसे हुए थे ? इस बात का भलीभाँति ज्ञान हो जाता है ।

English Translation 

When a man becomes steadfast in non-receiving, he gets the memory of past life.

sattvaśuddhisaumanasyaikāgryendriyajayātmadarśanayogyatvāni ca॥

Hindi translation 

शौच से अन्तःकरण की शुद्धि, मन का प्रफुल्ल भाव, चित्त की एकाग्रता, इन्द्रियों पर जीत और आत्मसाक्षात्कार की योग्यता – ये पाँचों भी होते हैं ।

English Translation 

one achieves purification of the Sattva, cheerfulness of the mind, concentration, conquest of the organs and fitness for the realization of the Self.

deśa, bandha:,citasya‌, dhāraṇā ‌॥3.1॥

अपने चित्त को किसी भी एक स्थान पर (नाभि, हृदय या माथे पर) बाँधना, लगाना, ठहराना, या केन्द्रित करना धारणा कहलाती है ।

English Translation 

Dharana is holding the mind to one place, object or point.
